Majorette Troupe, Wakefield.
The Silver Silhouettes are a majorette group based in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.
The Silver Silhouettes were created from an idea of 3 young girls at a local youth centre in November 2001. A training youth worker (Sam) who was an ex-majorette, started working at the centre. To create an interest to the members Sam began to show them some basic routines.
Before long word had got around about the work Sam was doing and it wasn't long before people were asking Sam to start up a troupe in the area.
Following alot of persuasion from the girls of the youth centre, a few enquiries were made, and a building was made available 2 nights a week so this was the beginning of the Silver Silhouettes.
We started slowly with simple routines to build confidence among the troupe and to help create a warm feeling of team spirit between the members. By January 2002, we had around 30 members and parents soon began to get involved too. This gave us the oppurtunity to start fundraising for the troupe. After several events we raised enough funding to buy batons, pom-poms and uniforms.
In May 2002 after lots of hard work the troupe had their first performance at a local gala. Then in August 2002 their first competition. The girls were excellent in both and continued to improve at each display.
At the end of August 2002 we had our first presentation evening where we honoured our majorettes for their hard work and determination to make this dream a reality. The parents were also thanked for their help and Sam was presented with numerous gifts from the troupe as a thankyou for her commitment to this group of girls.
At this time due to growing numbers we enlisted the help of a new trainer, Rachel.
After two successful years with lots of excellent performances from the troupe a tragedy happened. Unfortunately, in February 2004, our beloved Sam was taken away from us with a short and sudden illness. Words simply cannot express the great sorrow everyone feels at the loss of a great friend and inspiraton to all.
The Silver Silhouettes now train harder than ever to ensure that the dream and efforts of Sam will live on always. Following this tragic event Rachel kindly volunteered to take over the reigns, and continue to train and manage the running of the troupe.
In June 2004 due to the ever growing numbers of the troupe Rachel asked her cousin Tina if she would help train the senior and tiny section of the team and Tina accepted.
After the hard work from all involved with the troupe in 2005 the girls had an excellent year and managed to win 45 1st places 44 2nd places and 14 3rd places, we also won lots of other prestigous awards.
Now due to family commitments, Rachel and Tina have had to resign from training and the running of the troupe. However we would like to thank them for all their efforts with the troupe and wish them well for the future. They did a brilliant job with the girls and the troupe wouldn't be where it is today if it wasn't for them.
So what now?????
The parents of all the girls have pulled together to keep the troupe and the dreams of Sam alive. We have two excellent new trainers in Amie and Louise who we are sure will continue to improve the troupe and help them to even more competition victories. Practices are now taking place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Kettlethorpe Youth Centre and Kettlethorpe Community Centre.
As well as the new trainers the troupe has also had over 15 new starters in November 2007. The new girls are eager to start training again and learn some more moves from the new trainers...
